The River

There is a river of pain within me
And it’s full of all of my tears
Sometimes it rushes violently
Crashing on rocks,
tearing down the branches in my mind
I’m not a strong swimmer,
or so the story goes,
And yet I swim there often
At one with all my fears
If I flail and grasp as I am rushed down
There is a terror I will be swept
in to an ocean
And drown

But if I stop gripping and just float
Letting the current carry my heart
The waters always eventually calm
And I can come to land again
And on the shore I laugh
With new confidence and space
where joy can live.
I am learning
That water is my friend.
